Connecting With the Archangels

Archangel Michael. The angelic realm's mission is to protect, nurture, and guide humanity.

Connecting With the Archangels

The angelic realm’s mission is to protect, nurture, and guide humanity. Races, cultures, and religions may have diverse and conflicting doctrines, but they all have one thing in common—a belief in Angels. In fact, 85 percent of all religions reference Angels in some form or another.

Angelic Beings team up to assist us in connecting the physical world to the spiritual world. Angels offer unconditional love, which is the essence of all that is. Open yourself up to the possibility that Angels exist and invite them to help you with self-love, well-being, abundance, love, prosperity, peace, and joy. By asking, you allow them to assist on your behalf. Angels always honour free will and act only once invited, so remember to ask.

A Four-Step Process

There is a simple four-step process that will assist you in connecting with the Archangels.

1. Ask—Begin by asking for assistance: For the angels to help in any area of your life, you must first “ask” for their assistance. There is no right or wrong way to do this. A simple intention works just as well as a verbal expression or a telepathic conversation. Simply saying, “Angels, please help me,” is enough.

Asking in a way that feels appropriate to you will ensure that the Angels will answer your call and stand by your side. The important step is to recognize that you are in need of support, guidance, direction, encouragement, etc., and be willing to ask for it.

2. Allow—Release the need to control the situation and be open to receive: Allowing is as easy as “getting out of your own way.” When you release the need to control situations, people, and emotions, and just allow the flow and the laws of the Universe to work on your behalf, then you open up room for all of the good to come into your life.

Allowing frees up your energy to do the things that make you happy and to receive the abundance that is innately yours. Your Angels always see your life from the perspective of allowing. They support that vision “for you” and “within you” until you are able to feel it for yourself.

The sooner you learn to let go of resistance and start affirming what you desire, the sooner you will come into alignment with what you are asking for. Once the asking and allowing are in alignment with one another, then you are well on your way to believing.

3. Believe—Trust that the Angels will guide you in perfect divine time: Trust can be one of the most difficult attitudes to adopt, especially when you do not have any evidence that you will receive what you desire.

Trusting typically requires you to be vulnerable with others and, in this case, with the Angels. I made a decision a long time ago when I started working with the angelic realm, and that decision was to give up “suspicions.” I made a conscious choice to be optimistic rather than pessimistic, and that choice proved to be instrumental in my working relationship with my Archangels.

So it is your choice to trust that you are being guided in the perfect divine time. If you are feeling a desire from your heart, trust that the Angels will guide you in the perfect way for your highest good.

4. Receive—Listen to your intuitive guidance and give thanks: You’ve asked, allowed, and believed. The last step is to now receive. Your Archangels and guides will send you many messages. It could be a song on the radio, the flicker of a light, a sign on a bus, the letters on a license plate.

Messages come in many ways and many forms, and I ask that you be open to receiving them in ways that may be new or different to you. As the messages and signs appear, you will find that they will validate that you are on the right path. And, finally, remember to give thanks for the abundance, joy, happiness, and love that are presently in your life. Don’t give up five minutes before the miracle happens. Stay open to receive all that is yours.

2012 – Armageddon Or New Humanity?

December 2012 signifies the end of the old and the beginning of a new cycle in the history of human consciousness. The polar axis of the earth has been gradually moving since the 50’s. As it shifts to its final position, a new energy will be freed to set into motion the new era of humanity and help it enter into a higher vibration of existence. Like an earthquake that quivers things on the surface of the planet, the final shift in polar axis will create massive destruction on the physical, mental, and emotional planes all around the globe. Everything that we have built and lived with for 25,000 years in these three realities will be tested for their viability and possibility of survival. The North and South weather will reverse, and the power and wealth will shift from the hands of the greedy to the hands of the light workers.

Universe

The Universe evolves and expands as a result of transformation of the unconscious energies into consciousness. Through millions of years of evolution of consciousness on this planet, the energy vibrations that were sustainable on a physical plane have now become obsolete and are beginning to prevent further evolution in consciousness. Mother Nature now feels an existential need to destroy the old outdated structures humanity has created on this planet so that a new structure can be put into motion.

The last great destruction happened during the Atlantian era. This was inevitable due to the imbalance of power within the human race. We are now in a similar situation, where only a very few hold power and control over the masses. Their power is fueled by insecurity, greed, and manipulation, and is designed to benefit just a few. This imbalance can no longer sustain itself and is vividly evident through the global economic and political breakdown.

Terrorists exist because of different religious ideologies and political values. They exist because of the suppression of the individual and his and her potential for consciousness, freedom, and joy. Many people now recognize that unless they decide living with one universal consciousness, humanity might disappear as a species.

The New Era will bring with it an awareness of Universal Consciousness. Though the beginning of the new era is signified by the year 2012, the preparation for it has been going on for thousands of years. There have been many teachers who have come and gone throughout the centuries and have left their footprints, but they have not been able to help on a global scale because their teachings were localized in small areas. Starting with the most ancient teachings of the Upanishadic seers in India ninety thousand years ago, many masters have pointed to the need for self-awareness and self-realization. Unfortunately, up until now, very few people were conscious and intelligent enough to recognize the message of their teachings and find their own inner truth.

With the appearance of the Buddha 2,500 years ago, a new cycle of manifestation of consciousness began. As his teachings spread from India to China, to Japan and eventually throughout the world, more and more people became aware that through a simple technique of just watching ones breath it was possible to break out of the illusion created by the ego-mind and experience transcendence into oneness. The Buddha, in a way, fathered the concept of enlightenment and gave specific instructions on how to achieve it through meditation. What the Buddha put into motion 2,500 years ago will come to fruition and a collective transformation into the New Era of Universal Consciousness is now possible.

Another teacher of the same caliber as the Buddha, Osho, lived in the past century. Osho created havoc for the old organized structures and outlined the blue print of how the New Man and the New Humanity can be created and function in a completely new way. He spoke of the need to disconnect from the past by destroying the old outdated social, religious, and political structures that have kept humans in shackles and he sowed the seeds on how to live with a new vision. These seeds will be absolutely pure of any kind of doctrine, greed, jealousy, and conditionings and will brings fresh new flowers that we have never seen before.

energy

A significant number of humans are now recognizing that everyone belongs to the same universe and no one can ever be separate from Creation. Many are becoming aware of their innate state of power and religiosity, which is independent of any organized religious belief or conditioning. Many are beginning to see that the Will of Creation is the ultimate Will, and they are recognizing the deception of the ego that keeps them separate from the whole.

Those who see this will be able to surrender their separate will and be blessed with an opportunity to heal into consciousness and find their immortal being, which endlessly journeys within the vastness of this compassionate Universe, continually learning, creating, and expanding in consciousness. Each moment of healing into consciousness will help to prepare us for the ultimate surrender and liberation from our ego-mind. Those who gather the courage to surrender the small will of their ego will be the torch-bearers for the new cycle of evolution of humanity and will lead the way.

It took 25,000 years for enough people to evolve into greater consciousness and they are now ready to make a difference in shifting and transforming the collective into a new level of wakefulness.

Facing the Inevitable Truth

The Mayan calendar ending at 2012 signifies that our old way of living will also end. Each individual will face an opportunity to liberate their consciousness from the fears created by the conditionings of the ego. Whether we like it or not, everyone will be faced with needing to accept the truth that there is only One Existence and One God. The multiple concepts of God have been created out of fear of the unknown and the need to control. These man-made concepts about the many different Gods have created much pain and suffering for humanity and have brought us to self-destruction. Our survival is now predicated on renunciation of the many different concepts of God and unification as cosmic beings belonging to the earth and the universe.

The year 2012 will bring us an opportunity to start living with awareness that we are the creators of our own destiny and thus need to take responsibility for our own actions. Instead of allowing others to dictate what’s right and wrong for us individually we need to learn to stand up for our own inner truth.

Up until now the old structures have encouraged humanity to live in constant fear of death and struggle for survival. Due to this everyone has learned to suppress their true thoughts and emotions and behave artificially. Even if we think that we have a free will, our fears undermine it. 2012 will shed new light on our fears and will encourage us to be honest with ourselves and others. By becoming aware of the unconscious state we have lived in and by taking the needed action to be honest and truthful we can truly exercise our free will and experience true Love and Joy.

The New Beginning

new humanity

The end of 2012 will be the end of the world as we know it. 2012 will awaken us out of our collective sleep and will destroy our old beliefs, ideologies, and behavior patterns. All our emotional, mental, and physical foundations will be shaken, giving us an opportunity to surrender our fears, conditionings and old belief systems. This destruction will help us purify our first three chakras, and propel us collectively higher into the fourth chakra, where we will begin to function through our heart.

In a sense, this destruction will not be negative, although it may seem so at a first glance. The farmer knows that in order to sow new seeds he needs to first till the soil. If we are to survive the changes and create a new foundation we need to surrender our attachments to old social, political, and religious conditionings and sow new seeds based on honesty, integrity and purity of the heart. To start a new garden we need to weed it first. If the weeds are left to grow, they will eventually take over the garden and will suffocate the delicate flowers. Similarly, we need to weed our old patterns so we can awaken to our true potential.

2012 will shake people on many different levels. Many will realize that everything is temporary and sooner or later will be taken away. People will start to see that the only thing that matters and is of value are their heart connections.

2012 will give humanity an opportunity to dissolve borders and allow for conscious people to run the world’s affairs. The leaders will be those who have the best intentions at heart for all humans. The society will begin serving the individual and help each person blossom to their fullest potential.

The new beginning will give birth to a new man and a new woman who will follow the way of the heart instead of belong to any nation, or religious ideology. They will follow their own intelligence and inner knowing, and will be true to their own nature, which knows that we are all one and we are all God.

2012 – An Opportunity for True Love

2012 will bring many opportunities to build a new foundation that can support true love. Love has only been a concept until now. Christ consciousness can only be lived through the heart. To be truly loving, one need not talk about love but live in love and act out of love. True love brings freedom, not bondage, and it allows the other to find his and her own truth. True love does not impose. It has no conditions attached. True love allows the other to fly with his or her own wings. True love can only be felt and not talked about. True love is an ability to feel and know the transcendental. True love helps us to transcend the mind and move higher in consciousness. True love is our ability to share ourselves with others and the universe without fear. True love is the foundation of joy and creativity. True love is the foundation of honesty and truthfulness. True love does not compromise, control and manipulate.

Because these qualities are missing in our social structure, true love has remained only a possibility up until now. Once we stop cultivating competitiveness, emotions like jealousy and envy will melt away, and we will begin to experience and live in true love.

Most of our literature and life experiences have been based on the raw emotions of the first three chakras. We have learned to live with internal and external struggle and drama. We have created make-believe structures and ideologies about love and how it should be practiced. In the name of love, we have been conditioned to suppress and compromise our inner truth. Rarely have we seen and experienced the beauty and grace that arises out of spiritual values such as bliss, kindness, and unconditional love. Rarely have we experienced pure love that has no attachments to outcomes.

Everything artificial will soon be exposed on a mass scale. 2012 will bring to surface both our beauty as well as our ugliness. Those who are after their own selfish interests will become more and more visible and more and more miserable. Those who have been working hard to purify themselves and find their true being will have much to be grateful for, for they will find true happiness and joy which is within their own heart.

Children – Our Golden Future

children

Humans have lived giving lip service to each other and have taught their children to do the same. We have all been taught to manipulate and use each other to meet our own selfish needs. We all know too well how we use beautiful words but don’t mean what we say. We have taught our children to follow suit and have turned them into artificial mechanical robots just like we are. To heal this damage and allow for the new seeds to sprout we need to start honoring our children and make sure that we don’t contaminate their innate wisdom with dogmas and beliefs. We need to encourage our children to find their own truth and live by their own light, strength, and wisdom. Instead of instilling fear in children, the new structure will support and encourage them to find their individuality and discover for themselves what is false and what is true.

Children need to grow having the support of their parents to learn to stand up for themselves. They need to communicate to the world that they are not willing to live with the old outdated structures and they need to create their own future based on their own inner wisdom and sense of honesty and fairness.

The new changes will not happen overnight. Once the ground is tilled and the new seeds are in place, we need to nurture them by watering them and giving the needed sunshine and air so they can sprout. It will take time for the new seedlings to grow and develop. In order for this to happen, those of us who are conscious and aware need to keep weeding the ground around our children so the weeds don’t choke their delicate growth before they come to their maturity.

Are you Ready?

The transition through 2012 is going to be difficult for some people, yet easy for others. The level of difficulty will depend on how well each person has prepared himself or herself physically, mentally, and spiritually.

It is all a matter of vibration. To prepare oneself means to refine your energy vibration. This can only be done by taking full responsibility for your own transformation from unconsciousness into consciousness. It is each person’s responsibility to start functioning from higher energy centers (charkas) to move past the ego-mind and its desires. In the higher chakras, fear of survival, competitiveness, and the sense of separation are transformed into love, compassion, and awareness of one’s true being. Once we recognize that our being never dies, we truly understand the meaning and purpose of life. If more people start living with the awareness that their being is eternal and indestructible, and that no one can control and manipulate them, most fears will disappear. People will be happy to take risks and begin living in the present instead of dwelling on the past or escaping into the future.

2012 can be a year of mourning or a year of celebration. It will depend on what you choose it to be. It will be mourning for those who do not want to let go of their attachments and desires, and a year of celebration for those who are ready to surrender their ego-mind and awaken to the truth of their Being. Regardless of our choice, we will be forced to live in a new way. The new way will honor truthfulness, authenticity, and integrity instead of honoring fearful, controlling, and manipulative behaviors. The new way will expose selfish behaviors and will honor sincerity, courage, and compassion for others. Instead of persecuting those who expose their inner light to dispel darkness, humanity will begin treating them with reverence and respect for their contribution. And those who are ready to honor the light of their own consciousness will pave the way to their own salvation.

As we move towards the Enlightened Era in human evolution, we will begin remembering our true source and immortality, and will stop suffering. Those with best intentions at heart for themselves and others will set the new standards of social living. Their light will shine brightly paving the way for many others to transit between the old and the new. No harm will come to those who are conscious, as their consciousness alone will protect them.

The paradise that we seek outside of our true nature is already within us. To begin living paradise on Earth, we simply need to change our internal vibrations from unconsciousness into consciousness!

Seven Things you can do to Prepare for the 2012 Shift

1)    Ask yourself Who am I? and Why am I Here? Examine your attitude towards life and death and search for your eternal being.

2)    Surrender your personal will to the Will of Existence and whatever life brings you moment to moment.

3)    Make a list of your fears and allow yourself to act in spite of them. Don’t be afraid to be different.

4)    Understand and break through your social and religious conditionings. Search within to find your own answers instead of relying on other people’s opinion of what’s right for you.

5)    Look for the lessons you need to learn in every situation in spite of the ups and downs of life.

6)    Be honest with yourself and others and take full responsibility for your thoughts and emotions.

7)    Live each day as if it’s your last, and trust that existence always takes care of you.

Our Conscious And Subconscious Mind

Have you tried to change a bad habit, or try to motivate yourself, only to find out something deep inside your mind resisting? A basic law of the mind is working here: whenever the conscious and subconscious mind is at odds, your subconscious usually wins. This is the law of conflict.

Brain LevelsPeople usually change their habits through will power or through self-discipline. While they do work in some cases, most of us fail miserably. Logic works well with the conscious mind, but it often does not with the subconscious. Meditation or subconscious programming helps the subconscious mind. The conscious and subconscious mind displays different aspect of our mind.

Dynamic meditation is a simple process that most of us can do. It doesn’t cost much or require too much effort, yet the outcome is persuasive. It simply combines suggestion and imaginative visualization in a relaxed state of mind. The first thing to do is simply get to relax and imagine the desired traits or circumstance. This is combined with affirmation or suggestion constructed in present tense.

To understand how the conscious and subconscious mind works, first we must understand the 4 states of the mind. We are in what is called the beta state for almost all of our waking hours. Our mind radiates these waves when we think, reason or engaged in some problem solving. As our brain waves slow down, we enter what is called the alpha state of mind. The portal in our conscious and subconscious mind is opened. This allows access to memories and storing new information. This is also often regarded as meditative state, in which the mind and body become so relaxed. We are also at our most suggestible state.

Below the two types of conscious states is the theta, this is the dream state, and delta, which is basically us in deep sleep or unconscious. At alpha and theta state our words have extremely increased power. These are the two areas where controlled meditation is focused.

Why does controlled meditation work on the conscious and subconscious mind? There are six reasons as the Rules of The Mind as professed by the late Charles Tebbets.

First, every thought or idea causes a physical reaction. The mind has the capability to make you sick or keep you healthy. Ideas with a strong emotional component almost will reach the subconscious mind.

Second, what’s expected to happen tends to be realized. The brain and the entire nervous system responds only to mental images, whether self-induced or from the surroundings. The image formed becomes the template, and the conscious and subconscious mind carries out the thought.

Third, Imagination rules. Imagination overcomes knowledge when dealing with the mind. Ideas accompanied by a strong emotion state like anger or love cannot be modified through reason.

Fourth, Conflicting ideas cannot be kept simultaneously. Many people try to hold opposing ideas at the same time.

Fifth, Once an idea has been accepted by the conscious and subconscious mind, it will remain until another idea comes to fore. The longer an idea is held, the more it takes a hold of the mind. Forming into a habit or belief system .

Sixth, Emotionally induced sign tends to cause physical change if held onto long enough. We are a mind in a body and just like the conscious and subconscious mind the two cannot be separated.

This simple and safe process of controlled meditation combined with faith, hope, and passion, this allows for a healthier conscious and subconscious mind.

Moving Beyond the Ego Barrier

Moving Beyond the Ego Barrier

Moving Beyond the Ego Barrier

“I did it! I finally had the courage and saw it through. I never thought I could. It worked! I can’t believe it worked!”

These are the words of a woman I had been talking to about the behaviour of her teenage daughter. Her child had become so difficult that the mother was desperate. I saw the solution quite clearly. It came to me so strongly and firmly, controversially but I knew from the deepest part of me it would work and the two of them could resolve and have a brilliant relationship.

How did I know it was the right thing to say? How did I know it would resolve their difficulties? When your ego works in harmony with you it is easy for you to link with and trust your intuition and psychic perceptions.

When the ego is out of control and too big for its boots, it hinders the natural path of intuition, intuitive instinct and psychic ability. The ego self will deny the presence of intuition and rely heavily on logic, reason and emotional fears rather than embrace higher thinking automatically.

When developing psychic ability, at some point or another, people go through a period of time when an argument erupts between the inner ‘ego’ and ‘higher thinking’. The ego doesn’t like change; it is a creature of habit which is there to protect the physical existence of the human body. It is the part of you that knows stepping out in front of a moving bus means you get squashed. That is its purpose: it is there to remind you to protect the physical. The all-knowing part of you, however, is aware it is eternal and forgets it must look after the vehicle it travels in during this lifetime.

How do you tell the difference between ego and intuition?

Your intuition is relentless and cannot be budged from its position whereas the ego can be talked into and out of anything. An example would be if your intuition told you to pursue a particular career. No human on earth could truly talk you out of that feeling. They may be able to talk you out of following that feeling but never out of recognising that feeling.

It is often difficult to recognise which parts of you operate from the ego self. In this case we will use ‘ego’ to loosely describe fear or fear-based actions. Many of our fears operate without us fully participating or recognising what is taking place.

When we start to develop our psychic skills, it is more difficult for the ego to take control. This is why many people on the psychic path find it increasingly difficult to deny their truth. They find it challenging to: stay in situations or places that no longer suit; tell someone they are being mean rather than ignore it; suddenly change a job that they’ve been meaning to do for the past five years. These are all signs that they are getting a handle on the ego self and its control over them. It starts to operate in the form it was meant to and begins to work in harmony with, rather than against, the deep, never-ending knowledge of your instinctual intuitive self.

Today the woman and her daughter are talking again. Both are equally respectful of the other. It took less than a week to fix. She had previously been trying for months, even years. She did not have to sit down and read her daughter the riot act. She simple followed something scary and out of her everyday mindset.

She stepped outside the ego.

In the pursuit of happiness ~ the role of science and spirituality

What do you think can contribute significantly in the pursuit of happiness- Science or Spirituality?

I know that most of you would answer in favour of science. With its spectacular progress in last couple of centuries, science has definitely made human life much easier, healthier and comfortable with its innumerable inventions. Not only that, science has also provided human race with countless means of entertainment. It is no surprise that most of the younger generation is fervent enthusiast of Science.   Another factor that helped you in deciding in favour of science might be the ignorance of true meaning of spirituality and its misinterpretation as part of religion.

happiest-peopleThere are wide spread myths that science is logical, while spirituality is only based on beliefs and superstitions; science can be applied usefully in human life, whereas spirituality is mere set of esoteric impractical philosophies.   If Spirituality is defined as the exploration of the inner world: your mind, intellect, ego, life energy and the true nature of your spirit, then you might reconsider your answer. Let me shed some light on the word “spirituality”, before re-phrasing my question. As per Wikipedia, Spirituality is defined as “an ultimate reality or transcendent dimension of the world; an inner path enabling a person to discover the essence of his or her being, or the deepest values and meanings by which people live.” Spiritual practices, including meditation, prayer and contemplation, are intended to develop an individual’s inner life.   In the light of this clarification, let me ask you a few more questions: “Do you think peace of mind and contentment are important components of happiness?”, “Do you think Science has contributed to improve love, compassion, peace and contentment amongst people, societies and countries?”, “Do you think that because of recent scientific progress, man has become even more stressful and restless?”   Well, now you might be interested in analyzing this topic even further.

One of the well accepted definition of science is “the experimentally acquired knowledge of the objective laws that govern creation.” Spirituality can also be defined as science because it constitutes of the knowledge of divine laws that governs our inner world. When the objective knowledge is applied in the external world for the material benefit of human race, it can be called as applied modern science. When the subjective knowledge that is acquired by self-analysis of inner world by the mystics and saints, is applied for the spiritual benefit of human race, it is called as spirituality.

A few distinctions between science and spirituality.

Science explores the outer world and deals with the analysis of the objective world that can be sensed by our senses or instruments. Spirituality explores the inner world and deals with the analysis of the subjective world that is beyond senses i.e. the world of mind, intellect, spirit, love, compassion, peace and inner happiness. Science limits itself to the physical forms of energies that can be gauged, whereas spirituality deals with the supreme energy- the consciousness.   The goal of Science is to provide you with physical well being and physical comforts. The goal of Spirituality is to provide you with mental peace, contentment, love, compassion, peace and long lasting happiness.   Science has made human race selfish with no consideration to environment. During last century, due to scientific progress, human race has exploited and continue to exploit nature beyond viable limits. Spirituality refrain us from exploiting nature for our physical benefits and has thrived for thousands of years in true harmony with nature.   Science provides us with various means of deriving momentary sensual pleasures, whereas spirituality gives us insight to experience long lasting inner happiness by means of meditation, contemplation etc. Science tends to make us restless, whereas spirituality helps us to gain serenity of mind.   Just by exploring the outer world with the help of science, you get to know yourself as a limited body in the vast universe, whereas by exploring the inner world with the help of spirituality, you come to realize that you are part and parcel of the supreme spirit that is regulating the whole universe.   While exploring the objective world, science divides the object into parts and then analyze. In this manner it disintegrates the whole universe into different components. While exploring the subjective world, spirituality unites the whole universe as one non-dual conscious being.

Science and spirituality goes hand in hand in our pursuit of happiness.

Unfortunately, we learn a lot about various streams of science and the outer world in schools and colleges. However, there is no methodical training available to educate us about the inner world and about life in general; about what is the goal of life; about how to cope up with the adversities of life; about self restraint and refraining from over indulgence in sensual pleasures; about the higher values of life. This is where spirituality can help us.   Science can definitely provide us with a lot of gadgets to make our life easier and to entertain us. However, you also need spirituality, with the help of which you can make proper use of science, without abusing it.   Einstein insisted, “Science without Religion is lame, Religion without science is blind.” However, those scientists are very who try to spiritualize the Science and it’s rare to find spiritual mystics who scientifically approach spirituality. Science, if not supported with moral values, might put on an ugly face of destruction.   Science and spirituality are integral part of human endeavours to gain fulfilment in life. Science and spirituality are inseparable in the interest of the wholesome human progress. Thousands of years ago, the mystics of India realized this and inscribed in one of the Upnishads, called Ishopanishad that “the life of bare contemplation (spirituality and meditation) and the life of bare activity (applied science) are alike, fraught with evil; but that he alone may be said to attain the goal of life who knows how to harmonise the two different paths.”   For true human progress, money and materials alone cannot deliver the goods. The power given to man by science can be used to make heavens on earth if the due importance is given to spirituality as well. Our fulfilment is dependent on our ability to live in harmony with the external world, where science can help and our ability to live in harmony with ourselves, where spirituality can help. By maintaining the equilibrium of science and spirituality in our lives, we can not only enjoy the pleasures of outer world, but also the wholesome ever-present bliss of our spirit. This is the goal of our pursuit of happiness.

Recovering our True Self: The Journey Out of Our Negative States

Down through the centuries, spiritual teachers of all traditions have differentiated between our mundane, invented personality so filled with stress, and our true identity characterized by serenity, constancy, and wisdom.  They urge us to discover our inner depths and that vaster Self which enables right action in the world. Everyone of us is meant to live with joy and compassionate outreach to the people around us. We are designed to be masters of our selves, capable of overcoming all the difficulties of life. This is our birthright, but in order to experience it, we must recognize how far we are from living in this manner, why this is so, and what efforts we must make to live in such a way. This new awareness and these efforts are the process that leads us out of our negative emotional habits in order to enter into the depths of our spiritual nature.

true-selfTo recover from our ingrained habits and our subconscious imitations of parents and peers is truly spiritual warfare.  It is the narrow way that few want to travel as it requires going against the grain of our own behavior.  It is making the hard choices rather than taking the easy way as we always have.  This process takes place in the trenches of our most ordinary interactions with the world.  Authentic spiritual development takes place in that moment of irritation, that moment of unkindness, that moment of selfishness that we encounter the heat of the battle.  This inner battle determines who we are and how we live this life during our brief journey through time.

Here then are some specific methods for recovering from those toxic habits:

The first and most fundamental effort is the objective study of ourselves. Why? Because nothing real can take place until we know what we are dealing with. We cannot take for granted that we know how or why we function the way we do. If you want to operate a computer, you have to learn the software. Human beings are complex software indeed and are rarely user friendly. So try observing yourself from a completely neutral standpoint. Do not judge what you see. Just see it. Observe your reactions, your attitudes, your moods and the many aspects of yourself that take charge from moment to moment. If you do this with sincerity and courage, not justifying every action and passing thought, you will begin to see yourself more objectively and initiate the awareness of the Observing Self who will be the key to your recovery.

This simple effort begins the process of creating a space within you that is not completely hypnotized by external events. Though you still react to external circumstances through ingrained habit, there is now this sliver of your Self that is not pulled out of you. A new space of inner freedom is being created along with a new sense of a deeper identity than the surface personality.

Another critical aspect of this observation is the study of our negative states. You will be amazed at how much of our time is spent under the dominance of these dark moods and thoughts. You will catch yourself grumbling about other people, feeling dejected over this or that event, complaining about the weather, resenting something somebody said. Nothing healthy can grow under the constant downpour of this acid rain within you. Eventually, you will discover that you can free yourself from such unpleasant behavior and states of mind. Step one is to turn off the leaking faucet: stop expressing negative emotions.

This effort is the beginning of separating yourself from them. You don’t have to accept living in those dark states. You are not them. They are bad habits acquired over a lifetime. If you want healing and joy in your life, you must stop the momentum of negativity. One of the important things to observe about negative states is how much energy they take away from us. If you are aware of yourself before and after a moment of rage, you will see very clearly how much energy has been lost in that brief moment. We only have so much energy available to us each day, and we can use it to be healed and renewed, or we can squander it thoughtlessly.

So notice your thoughts before they plant themselves in your feelings and eventually manifest in your actions. Anger at a colleague or spouse can be caught before it has caused internal and external damage. In that more rational, detached place before the feeling has caught you by the throat, you can notice why you are angry. What is it in you that is reacting that way? What is it in your colleague that has caused his or her behavior which is so disturbing? Anger can then turn into compassion, or at least into a new insight about yourself or another.

After self-observation and separation from negative states comes the next all-important practice: becoming present to the moment. Experience the moment as it is, for what it is. Becoming present grounds you in reality here and now and takes you out of the tempests of imagination and inner talking that fill the mind with so much noise. Become present not only to your surroundings, but to your body. Relax the tensions that you haven’t even noticed before: In the shoulders, in the jaws, in the stomach. Begin to experience the revitalizing peace of being alive in this moment. Those of you familiar with meditation know how helpful it is to regulate one’s breathing in order to center oneself. Just breathing in and out slowly to ease the inner tensions is a powerful tool for nourishing your spirit in the moment. Learn to sit quietly for awhile. This is no luxury or idle behavior. We are so wracked with stress and worry that we cannot recover enough to get back in touch with ourselves until we are released from the grip of our anxieties. We rob ourselves of the very joy of living when we let ourselves fall into endless worry and nervous tension. Take time to let go of all that.

This daily effort teaches us to stop or at least to step back from the constant flow of thoughts that creates reality for us. This means that most of our worrying and anxious considerations fall by the wayside and we are able to rise above the clouds of our immediate concerns to the larger picture of our existence as a whole. Sometimes, however, the flood of thoughts refuses to slow no matter what we do. Our nerves are so frayed that we cannot achieve the simple peace of looking out the window and enjoying the view without anything coming to mind. That’s when you might employ the stop exercise. In the midst of a thought or daydream, tell yourself to stop and abruptly cut short what is going on in your mind. Then relax your body and look around you, just seeing what is there. Take a vacation from the inner turmoil.

So our daily practice for recovering from a life polluted with negative emotional habits includes: objective observation of our selves, separation from negative states, quieting the mind, and becoming present to the moment. You will notice how these practices begin to take us out of our usual nervous tension and keep us from mindlessly responding to everything around us by turning a portion of our attention inward and by expanding our perspective in the moment.  We then become more than our self-centered, habitual mass of reactions.

If you apply these techniques regularly, you will soon find yourself living more frequently in that space of peace, of centeredness, of recovery from being victims of automatic reactions. Then you will find that you become capable of a serenity and acceptance of what is, of a surrender of selfishness that empowers you to help others as well as yourself.

Such a journey of emotional and psychological recovery offers us a new spiritual empowerment which enables us to accept life as it comes, even with all its complications and the capacity to act rightly in any given situation. This developing inner power creates a free human being who is no longer entangled in his or her selfishness and constant stream of fears and desires. Such a person can journey through life in peace, with wisdom and compassion. Such a person makes the world a better place.
