Breathing Meditation – Your safe harbour in a storm.

Breathing meditation is one of the simplest and easiest mindfulness exercises. Focusing awareness on your breathing takes your attention away from the raging tempest of thoughts and emotions that usually swirl around inside you during times of great stress. When you feel like you are spiralling out of control on the way to rock bottom, breathing meditation can be a lifeline around your sanity. Let’s take a look at how easy and effective this can be.

An Overview of Breathing Meditations

Breathing meditation is an exercise in mental awareness, not an exercise in physically controlling your breathing. Thus, if you suffer from breathing difficulties, such as COPD, this isn’t something you’ll do with your physical therapist. While mindfulness is generally an excellent antidote to stress, if the struggle to breathe is itself the cause of your stress then this may not be the best mindfulness exercise for you. But for most people, the process of breathing is controlled beautifully and unconsciously by the autonomic nervous system, and makes for an excellent anchor for our attention.

To begin the exercise, place yourself in a comfortable position, relax each part of your body in turn, and then close your eyes. For the next five to ten minutes, focus only on your breathing. If your mind wanders – which it will – just gently bring it back to your breathing. To help you focus (and stop you from going in the other direction and spacing out) keep a running count of each out-breath, from one to ten repeatedly.

After numerous sessions of counting your out-breaths, switch focus to your in-breath, counting before you breathe in. This makes you aware of the different feel of the in-breath – one of gathering energy – in contrast to the release of the out-breath.

When you feel you are ready, drop the counting altogether and just focus on your breathing. While counting can help you focus, it also breaks the seamless flow of breathing into a choppy, discontinuous series of individual breaths. Try to feel the air at the rims of your nostrils, and even on your upper lip.

This level of sensitivity may take a while to develop, but one of the purposes of mindfulness exercises is to enhance the richness of your present moments, bringing to consciousness fine details that are usually missed. In other words, mindfulness makes you more alive in the here and now, and over time this becomes apparent across your entire waking life, not just during meditation itself.

Dealing with Distractions

The issue of distractions brings us back to our primary purpose. When you are distracted by all those random thoughts or emotions that impinge on your awareness, you are like a car driver who allows an obnoxious passenger to take hold of the wheel. You are no longer in control, and this is not an acceptable state of affairs. But it is vital not to become annoyed or disappointed with yourself; in fact, there is something to celebrate here.

At that precise moment when you realise that you have lost your focus and become distracted, you are taking the passenger’s hands off the steering wheel and putting yours back on. You are becoming more aware; you are learning that you have a choice about the contents of your mind. And with choice comes freedom.

Thus, whenever you bring your attention back to your breathing after a rude interruption, do not judge yourself. Take a moment to pat yourself on the back for rising above the distraction. (Don’t overdo it, though, since this little celebration can itself become a distraction!) In a sense, the right attitude to adopt toward yourself is one of loving-kindness, which we have discussed in companion articles on this website. Breathing meditation is, in fact, a prelude to more advanced Buddhist meditations such as loving-kindness, and the calmness it will give you is a necessary precondition for insight.

Using this simple exercise, you will always be able to regain inner control and restore your sanity with just a few minutes to spare.

The Essential Keys to Spiritual Development

The Essential Keys to Spiritual Development. How many of us view having inner balance, a sense of oneness and peace with the world as something that truly completes us?

The Essential Keys to Spiritual Development

When we think of our wellbeing, the first thing that usually comes to mind is our physical health. We equate it with how fit we are, how healthy the food we eat is, and how much vitamins and mineral supplements we ingest. But how often do we primarily equate it with spiritual development? How many of us view having inner balance, a sense of oneness and peace with the world as something that truly completes us? If you feel that you need to work on this area of your life, here are some of the essential keys you need to know and practice:

Control your thoughts.

Spiritual development starts with removing all negativity from your thoughts. For instance, if you’re the type who always thinks of the worst case scenario, train yourself to be rational. Did your spouse fail to return your calls or messages on time?

Rather than quickly assuming that they may have gotten into an accident, think of alternative, less nerve-wracking reasons. They may be in an area where the signal is pretty bad; hence they are unable to respond. Or they may have gotten caught up in a last minute emergency meeting in the office. Choosing to think of the “lesser evil” of the possible reasons will help calm you down and sustain your inner balance.

Control your actions.

Your actions in the heat of the moment reflect the state of your inner balance. Don’t let your knee-jerk reactions get in the way of your spiritual development. You need to be in control of yourself during trying times. Getting carried away will only open you up to a world of regret when you have calmed down and reflected on your unsavoury behaviour. So if you want to minimize regrets and lessen the chances of destroying relationships permanently, count one to ten before you slap the offending party in the face!

Control your emotions.

Spiritual development is also dependent on your ability to control your emotions. If you get easily flustered, panicky or hysterical when you hear bad news, get insulted or receive poor reviews, you won’t be able to attain inner balance and peace. Not to mention you will surely end up with high blood pressure and extreme anxiety which could lead to serious health issues!

So the way to solve this is to build emotional resilience. Learn to detach yourself from the smallest, most insignificant things and focus only on those that matter. Handle crisis, stress and pressure calmly and with a level head. It also helps to plan ahead for outcomes you can easily predict; that way you’re not caught unaware and you lessen your chances of going on panic mode.

Be open-minded and flexible.

Some of us can be micromanaging control freaks! If you are one, then surely you know the feeling of having your inner balance thrown off when things don’t go your way. If you give your child maths lessons so that he gets an A+ in the test, then he comes home with an A-minus, it’s not the end of the world. Don’t plan your travel itinerary to the letter because you might get crushed when the museum you planned to visit happens to be closed that day. Learn to look past the disappointments and focus on the good things. Learning to adapt to situations keeps you calm and, as a result, helps you achieve spiritual development.

Practice tolerance.

In order to be at peace with yourself and with the world, you need to accept that people are different. There are cultures, religions, norms, political views and social practices that may seem alien to you, but if you exercise tolerance and respect for others, you will easily achieve spiritual development. Remove all prejudice and hatred from your heart. You will become a much better person without being weighed down by “preconceived garbage” in your heart and mind. Live and let live; with this maxim, attaining inner balance should be a cinch.

Achieving internal harmony need not require a trip to a monastery in some far flung nation. The truth is, the process starts and ends within you. So, rather than literally crossing mountains to find your enlightenment, aim to move mountains within by removing all barriers to your spiritual growth and development.

Mind Power – The Secrets

Mind power - The Secrets. You probably didn't know it, but your mind is actually far more powerful than you think. Like a magnet, what it sees and thinks it will eventually bring to itself.

Learn Mind Power – The real secrets

You probably didn’t know it, but your mind is actually far more powerful than you think. Like a magnet, what it sees and thinks it will eventually bring to  itself. This is something called the ‘Law of Attraction’. What the law of attraction basically states is that if you believe something, it’s going to  happen.

The law of attraction is basically the act of believing something  is going to happen so strongly that it does. You can have the best life if you  want it, but you have to be able to think it, feel it, and envision it first.  This may take some practice, but success only comes with persistence in any  endeavor. The power of the mind is amazing.

Most people do not realise  how powerful their mind is. According to research, people only use 10% of their  actual brain power. That means 90% is going to waste! Instead of believing in  our mind power, we stick with what we know and take the easy way.

This is  part of the reason that we have trouble in life. We think negative thoughts  because we do not believe that the positive can happen. We just continue to  attract negativity. The reality is that when we think that way then it will  happen.

First, understand that ‘reality’ is within your mind. Whatever  you’ve got to this point has been because of your subconscious mind power. A lot  of people think that everyone has extra sensory or psychic powers. But you have  to make an effort for these powers to come out. Your mind power is real; just  choose to use it.

If you want something better out of life, you just have  to visualize it.and this works in reverse, too. People who expect the worst, get  the worst.

A few things you can do may help you to increase your mind  power. One thing you can try is a technique called visualization. This is a  powerful technique that will let you exercise your mind. It can even lead to you  gaining more mind power.

When you visualize,  what you do is to sit down and create pictures and images inside your mind’s eye. Doing so is going to bring these images to life in your own reality, but  first, you have to start by thinking about it. You need to get your subconscious mind involved, too, because your subconscious mind is very powerful when it  comes to creating your own real-life from the images you see.

The  subconscious mind is what will actually bring these images to life. Make sure  the images you hold in your mind are positive images. Think a little bit about  how you actually want your life before you begin your visualization  practice.

You might try this: Write everything down on a piece of paper,  either as a list or as though you were telling a story. What goals do you have  for yourself? Then, create what you visualize around these goals. Writing these  things down will make it hard for you to simply ignore them another day. Try  doing this several times a day at first until what you’re doing becomes ‘real’  to you.

You can also use affirmations to increase your mind power. Affirmations are simply little, encouraging positive sayings that you can save  yourself throughout the day. It can be about anything. For example, if you want  to lose 10 pounds, you can say something  to the effect of, ‘I’m losing the extra weight effortlessly and easily.’ As you  continue to say this, you may notice that truly, the weight is actually coming  off pretty easily. It’ll just naturally start to happen.

Positive things  will happen if you think positive. Just remember it also works the same way with  negative thoughts.

Another option is to use brainwave entrainment to  develop your mind power. This is done through the synchronization of brainwaves  using different frequencies through audio technology. The brain is an amazing  thing in that it can do more than one thing at a time. Using advanced audio  technology you can improve your minds power to heal.

You can also enhance  your memory and bring into effect the psychic powers you have, which already  exist. This is a pretty advanced procedure, but it does work.

Again, literally everyone has this  power, the power of the mind. It’s a matter of believing in your abilities and  then working on developing them. Again, this isn’t likely to happen overnight,  but it will happen if you stay focused. You can have the life you want. You can  change your circumstances from bad to good, or your luck from bad to good. As  you work on developing your mind power, you can then train it out into the  universe for good, so that what you put out will manifest back to you in the  positive, and is what you desire.

Remember everything starts with the  subconscious mind. The only thing holding you back is your conscious mind!

Coronavirus is the strangest virus I’ve ever heard of!

Coronavirus is the strangest virus I've ever heard of!

Coronavirus is the strangest virus I’ve ever heard of!

This coronavirus is the strangest virus I’ve ever heard of. It’s very dangerous the way it spreads.

It is so mysterious the way it lurks in schools, but then dies at Home Bargains.

It can wreak havoc in pubs and restaurants! Although it’s mind-boggling how it vanishes at the beach or in the park. Yet, standing to watch a marathon or at a gig or festival triggers its wrath.

It is sneaky. It can spread when buying clothes at Primark but not at Tesco or Asda.

It is non-alcoholic. It can’t spread when you are buying beer.

It lives for 24 hours on Amazon boxes, you must wait 24 hours to touch them but it can’t survive on takeaway coffee cups, so enjoying a hot latte is safe.

It is the most curious thing, how it lives on footballs, tennis rackets and ballet bars, but dies on shopping trolleys and food.

It is spread by hair stylists, dog groomers, and dentists, but not by bank machines, cashiers, and fast food workers.

It’s so smart. It won’t bother the first 6 people that get together but it knows when the 7th person shows up so be careful if that’s you.

It even knows what you want vs what you need. If you want a massage or your nails done it is very actively on the prowl and not even a mask can stop it. If you need a plumber, it is weak, and a mask will keep it away.

It also seems to be most dangerous after 5:30pm so businesses must start to close before the virus comes out and wreaks havoc upon the populations.

Whoever heard of such a smart sneaky virus??

Coronavirus is the strangest virus I’ve ever heard of!

Just unbelievable how people’s minds change and alter to fit in to their own logical wants and needs no matter what’s happening in the world…not even if it’s a matter if life or death!!
